Short Stays, Longer Stays and Planned Breaks

A break might be planned months ahead, or it might be needed because a carer is unwell or a home has become temporarily unliveable. At Australian Lifestyle Support Solutions, we arrange respite care in Hervey Bay along with short-term and medium-term accommodation across the Fraser Coast. Each stay is set up individually: we look at the support a participant already receives, what needs to carry over and what the accommodation itself needs to provide. Where a stay is part of a longer transition, our support coordination team can help work out what your plan funds and what comes next. Call (07) 4194 3100 to check availability and talk through dates.

Short-Term Accommodation (STA)

Short-term accommodation, often called STA, covers stays of up to 14 days at a time and includes the support provided during that stay. People use it for different reasons: a carer taking a planned break, repairs at home, a family emergency or simply a change of scene for a few days. STA funding covers accommodation, support, meals and activities as a package rather than separately. We'll confirm what your plan allocates before booking, since STA is funded by the number of days per year rather than as an open allowance.

Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA)

Medium-term accommodation covers longer stays, generally where a participant has somewhere to move to but it isn't ready yet. That might be a home being modified, a specialist disability accommodation placement still being arranged or a discharge from hospital where returning home isn't yet practical. MTA funds the accommodation itself; day-to-day supports during the stay are usually funded from other parts of a plan. We'll work out with you and your coordinator which part of the plan covers what before a stay is confirmed.

Planned and Emergency Respite

Respite gives carers a break and gives participants time in a different setting with support in place. It can be a single overnight, a weekend or a longer stretch, and it can be booked in advance as a regular arrangement or at short notice when circumstances change. During a stay, support continues as usual: personal care, medication, appointments and any therapy sessions already scheduled. We ask for details of routines, health care plans and preferences beforehand so the stay runs the way the participant is used to.

What We Need to Know Before a Stay

Booking a stay involves more paperwork than a hotel booking, and most of it is about making sure support carries over properly. We'll ask for the participant's plan and the funding allocated to accommodation or respite, any health care plan or behaviour support plan, a current medication list and contact details for the GP and any treating clinicians. We'll also ask about routines: sleep patterns, food preferences, what a good day looks like and what a difficult one looks like. If other providers deliver regular supports, we'll ask permission to contact them so scheduled therapy or appointments aren't missed. All of this is confirmed in writing before arrival, and we'll go through the arrangements with the participant and their carer together.

FAQs

  • In NDIS (opens in a new tab) terms they're largely the same thing, since respite is now funded under the short-term accommodation category. The word respite usually refers to the break the arrangement gives a carer, while short-term accommodation refers to the funding line that pays for it.
  • STA is typically funded as a number of days per year within a participant's core supports budget, and covers accommodation, support, meals and activities as one package. How those days are used across the year is generally flexible, subject to what the plan states.
  • Existing supports usually continue, with personal care, medication assistance and scheduled appointments delivered at the accommodation instead of at home. Details are confirmed in advance so nothing already booked, such as therapy sessions, is missed.
