Making Sense of What Your Plan Funds

An approved plan sets out budgets and categories, but it doesn't tell you which providers have availability or how to spend a line item. At Australian Lifestyle Support Solutions, working with a support coordinator in Hervey Bay means having someone go through the plan with you, explain what each budget covers and make the calls to providers across the Fraser Coast. Coordination is funded separately from the supports it arranges, so it doesn't come out of your core budget. If the supports you end up arranging include daily assistance, our service delivery team can provide those directly or we'll connect you with another provider. Call (07) 4194 3100 to check whether your plan includes coordination funding.

Support Coordination Services

Support coordination sits at level two of the NDIS (opens in a new tab) coordination categories, which covers coordination of supports. In practice that means working through the plan with you, identifying providers with capacity, setting up service agreements and keeping the plan moving when something falls over. Coordinators also help with the parts that aren't obvious from the plan document: navigating the myGov portal and participant portal, tracking budget use across the year and gathering evidence ahead of a plan reassessment. The aim is that you know what's in the plan and how to use it, not that the coordinator holds all of that on your behalf.

Specialist Support Coordination

Specialist support coordination is a separate, higher-intensity category in the NDIS for participants whose circumstances are more complex. It's funded where there are barriers that make standard coordination difficult: multiple services needing to work together, unstable housing, frequent hospital contact or a crisis that needs managing alongside everyday supports. A specialist support coordinator works to reduce those barriers and build a plan that holds together across providers. This category has to be funded specifically in your plan; it isn't something standard coordination funding can be used for.

Psychosocial Recovery Coaching

Psychosocial recovery coaching is for participants living with a mental health condition that affects daily functioning. A recovery coach works alongside you over time rather than session by session, helping you set your own goals, work out what supports fit and stay connected to services during periods when that's harder. Coaching is a distinct funding category from support coordination, and some participants have both. Recovery coaching isn't clinical treatment and doesn't replace a psychologist, psychiatrist or mental health care plan through your GP.

Capacity Building

Capacity building funding covers supports aimed at skills rather than day-to-day assistance. What that looks like varies: budgeting and money management, cooking, using public transport, managing appointments or preparing for work. Sessions are usually structured around a specific skill and reviewed as you go. Capacity building is a separate budget category in a plan and is generally more restricted in how it can be spent than core supports, so it's worth checking what yours is allocated to before arranging anything.

Coordination Categories and Which One Is Funded

There are three coordination categories in the NDIS and they aren't interchangeable. Support connection is the lightest, generally short-term help to link with providers. Coordination of supports, which is what we provide, covers ongoing work across providers and budget management. Specialist support coordination is the most intensive and is funded where complexity requires it. Your plan will name which one is funded and for how many hours, and funding can't be shifted between them. If you're not sure which you have, the plan document lists it under capacity building supports, and we're happy to look at it with you before you commit to anything. Where a plan doesn't include coordination funding at all, that's worth raising at your next reassessment.

FAQs

  • A support coordinator helps a participant understand what their plan funds, find and connect with providers and set up service agreements. They also monitor how a budget is being used across the plan period and help prepare for a reassessment.
  • No. Coordination is funded under capacity building supports as its own line item, so using it doesn't reduce the budget available for daily supports.
  • A support coordinator focuses on connecting and managing services across a plan. A psychosocial recovery coach works specifically with participants living with a mental health condition and focuses on goal setting and staying engaged with supports over time.
